How long have you been a pest controller?
Almost 9 years.
What made you start out in pest control?
I was made redundant and was looking for a new full-time job. My daughter went to school with owner’s daughter and put me in touch with him. At that point I knew very little about pest control, so I thought I’d give it a go!
What do you enjoy most about the job?
I really enjoy being out and about all day. It’s great to meet new people and enjoy the fresh air whilst working.
What is your most memorable job?
Several years ago, I was carrying out a treatment for fleas in void property for one of the local councils. This was a routine job and relatively simple as the property was empty. I had treated the whole of the downstairs and had started the rooms upstairs. As I opened one of the bedrooms a Staffordshire Bull Terrier ran out. It was not what I was expecting in an empty property and it certainly made me jump! To cut a long story short, a routine job ended up involving the RSPCA, police and the local council! I don’t think I’ll ever forget that one!
What is your favourite pest and why?
They aren’t really a pest, but my favourite animal we encounter are bumble bees. Many people see them as a nuisance and we don’t like killing them if we don’t have to. Several of us have been known to relocate nests and even take them to our own back gardens!
