Bed Bugs
Biology: Bedbugs now have full distribution throughout temperate zones of the world, although they favour the indoor environment. They are great travellers and are spread in luggage and furniture.The adults are
up to 3.5mm in length and have a thin waist, large abdomen and long legs, giving the insects its spider-like appearance. They vary in colour from pale straw to brown depending on how long since they last fed
and can last up to 1 year without a blood meal. The resulting bites cause severe irritatation and scratching can lead to secondary infection.
Control: The source of infestation should be traced and eliminated. Where very high populations of bedbugs are present, a single application of insecticide will not be sufficient, as even a 99% kill rate can still leave
sufficient survivors to form the basis of a new infestation. In such cases, additional treatments will need to be carried out until the infestation is eradicated. All floors and upholstered furniture should be vacuumed
and the vacuum bag should be disposed of in an outside bin. All areas should then be thoroughly treated with a residual insecticide or a desiccant spray.
