Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroach

Biology:
Males are approx 25mm in length with females being slightly larger at approx 32mm.They are shiny and very dark brown nearly black in appearanc with the nymphs being reddish brown. They are poor climbers on smooth surfaces and tend to be found in drains, sewers, and boiler houses. The egg case (ootheca) containing up to 16 eggs is laid near a food source and take 16 weeks to hatch. During the daytime cockroaches spend most of their time hidden away and emerge at night to feed. Adult cockroaches can live up to one year, during which females produce an average of 150 young. This cockroach prefers to feed on starchy foods but will adapt to survive.

Control:
The use of monitoring traps, to physically catch and determine the extent and distribution of an infestation, allows the treatment with insecticidal gels and well targeted use of residual insecticides where appropriate. This treatment normally requires a series of visits to erradicate the infestation. Night time inspections may be necessary in difficult to control infestation situations.
