Level 3 Diploma in Pest Management

Level 3 Diploma in Pest Management

The RSPH is in the final stages of developing a new qualification in pest control, the Level 3 Diploma in Pest Management, which will replace the current Level 3 Certificate in Pest Control. The new qualification will consist of a combination of core units that all candidates will take and a number of optional units in various pest control specialisms.

Candidates will take one of these specialist units in order to demonstrate their expertise in a particular field. The qualification is for all those in the pest control industry who wish to demonstrate their level of expertise and experience to their clients. The various specialist units make the qualification ideal for those who:

• work mainly in one specific area of pest control, such as rodent or bird management
• supervise other staff in larger organisations
• are ‘general practitioner’ pest controllers with a number of years experience
• have moved away from direct pest control into areas such as sales and marketing.

If you fit into any of these categories then the Level 3 Diploma in Pest Management is for you!
The qualification has been developed with the involvement of industry and leading pest control experts. The qualification structure and early drafts of the various units have been approved by the Pest Control Education and Training Forum run by Asset Skills. Asset Skills is the Sector Skills Council for the pest control industry and the forum includes representatives from industry (for example Ecolab, Igrox and Killgerm), national pest control organisations (BPCA and NPTA) and local government.

The qualification consists of a mixture of units at level 2 and level 3, compulsory and optional units.

Compulsory Units:
• Vertebrate Pests (Level 2)
• Invertebrate Pests (Level 2)
• Principles of Pest Management

Optional Units:

Candidates will select one unit from the following
• Management of Bird Pests
• Management of Non-Commensal UK Mammal Pests
• Management of Public Health Invertebrate Pests
• Management of Rodent Pests
• Management of Stored Product Invertebrate Pests
• Sale of Pest Management Services
• Supervisory Aspects of Pest Management

Assessment will vary depending on the unit. The compulsory units and the Supervisory Aspects of Pest Management unit will be assessed by an examination.
All other units will be assessed by a portfolio of coursework. Assessment of the Management of Public Health Invertebrate Pests and Management of Stored Product Invertebrate Pests units will include an identification practical.
