Starlings
Biology: Adults are glossy black with metallic green or purple tints. In winter the body feathers become tipped in white giving speckled appearance.
Juveniles are brown until autumn They nest in holes in trees or buildings, loft spaces etc. Nests are made from grass, lined with feathers, wool or moss.
More materials can be piled on top of a previous year’s nest, so they can become large and untidy where space not limited. Area round nest entrance is often
streaked with white droppings. They are gregarious with roosts of may be tens of thousands of birds in trees, on buildings, bridges pylons etc...
Control: Starlings are no longer listed as a "pest species" on the public health and safety General Licence in England, so control of the birds for these reasons
is no longer legal without a Special Licence. Nesting sites can be proofed after birds have fledged to prevent a reoccurence of the problem. Scaring using
distress calls in conjunction with other loud noises and bright lights can be very effective at moving starlings on from winter night roosts.
Managed scaring systems, using distress calls as the main technique, have also been found to be effective at dispersing summer resident starlings from
daytime feeding areas. Predator birds have been used successfully to disperse them from structures such as pylons.
