Do you have flea problem?

FleasFleas are one of the pests that can cause the most distress in households. They are commonly brought into homes by pets, or unknowing pet owners. There are several signs to look out for that might indicate that you have fleas sharing your home! These include:

  • Bites on family members – Most people will realise they have a problem when they, or a family member, are bitten. These can cause considerable discomfort, annoyance as well as anxiety.
  • Bites on pets – Pets can have excessive scratching as well as hair loss and
  • Seeing fleas regularly – They are reddy-brown in colour and about 2mm long and are visible to the naked eye.

How can I get rid of fleas?

Fleas can be easily managed but the key to overcoming a flea infestation is to ensure that both the pet and their surroundings are treated. One treatment is usually sufficient to control the infestation, as the products used carry on working for some weeks. The fleas should die off gradually after coming into contact with the insecticide. In some cases, depending on the scale of the infestation, a second treatment may be required or if resistance in suspected. Where very high populations of fleas are present, a single application of insecticide may not be sufficient, as even a 99% kill rate can still leave sufficient survivors to form the basis of a new infestation. If there is still a problem 2-3 weeks after the treatment, you can contact Pest Solution to book a further treatment.

Tips for getting the most out of a flea treatment:

  • Have a really good vacuum! This includes carpets, rugs and sofas. In particular, pay attention to areas where pets may sleep or where the sun may heat an area of floor as well as the floor wall junctions.
  • Empty the vacuum cleaner directly into the dustbin outside the house or change the bag after cleaning as the fleas will still be alive.
  • Make sure any pet bedding is washed and the beds are thoroughly cleaned.
  • If you have a pet, make sure it is being treated with an approved formulation, preferably via a vet.
