What are the options for DIY rodent problems?

Back in February, we posted a blog about the changes to amateur use rodenticides, and we frequently receive questions regarding this. Click here to refresh your memory on this topic.

In addition to the changes to amateur use rodenticides, there have also been changes to buying and using professional use rodenticides. From 1st October 2016, a proof of competence is required for the purchase of professional use rodenticides. This means that unless you have a certificate to prove you are qualified, you will get turned away when trying to buy them. The only exception to this is if you are a member of a Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) Approved Farm Assurance Scheme.

So, what can you do about these restrictions?
There are three main options:

  • Stick with the amateur products – This means that you can only buy and use small packs of rodenticides at a lower concentration. It may take longer to control the problem but should be just as effective. If you do take this route – please remember to always read the label first!
  • Get qualified – There are several qualifications available in the UK that meet the requirements set out by CRRU. Here at Pest Solution, we offer the RSPH Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Rodenticides. This is a one-day course with a short multiple-choice exam at the end of the day. This qualification will allow you to buy and use professional rodenticides with no questions asked.
  • Call in the professionals – Employ a fully qualified professional company such as ourselves, who will have access to all professional products on the market and be able to solve the problem for you.
