During the daytime cockroaches spend most of their time hidden away and emerge at night. Adult cockroaches can live up to one year, during which females produce an average of 150 young. Cockroaches prefer to feed on starchy foods but will adapt to survive. An integrated approach involving the use of cockroach traps, insecticidal gels and well targeted use of residual insecticides where appropriate is recommended.
Garden Ants usually nest outdoors in lawns, flower beds, beneath paving flags and at the base of walls. Premises are usually invaded by worker ants foraging for food, especially sweet foods. The trail of worker ants can be followed to the nest and if the nest can be exposed, and it is safe to do so, the nest can be treated with insecticide.
Tropical ants such as Pharaoh’s and Ghost ants are most often found in areas near a source of moisture such as a kitchen or bathroom. The use of conventional residual treatments is not effective as they may cause the nest to fragment. Baiting with a slow active ingredient is recommended to areas frequented by the ants, which works by stopping the ants breeding and so they naturally die off. You will usually notice a reduction in the number of ants within 14 days, but it may take longer to kill off all the insects.
Silverfish are mainly found in humid areas, usually the kitchen or bathroom where they feed on microscopic moulds and can be seen moving very fast when a light is switched on. Silverfish can be controlled by controlling the humidity of the affected area and using residual insecticidal dusts and sprays.
Woodlice are related to crabs and lobsters and are the only terrestrial crustacean. They are always associated with dampness as they very quickly dehydrate in a dry warm room. Woodlice can be controlled by controlling the humidity of the affected area and by the use of residual insecticidal dusts and sprays.
